Tatenda, George and three children live in a single room without gas or electricity. Tatenda and the two elder children work early morning to night selling basic commodities such as fruit, cigarettes, etc.

Sheila explains the difficulty of relying on her late husband’s pension in conditions of hyper-inflation.


07 - 09

Orphaned Grace and her widowed grandmother Natalie. Household assets include an oven, a couple of chairs and a Bible. Grace wants to be a doctor.


10 - 11

Twenty seven families living in an old hall after being displaced by the government’s 2005 “clean up” program. Curtains delimit each family’s living space.


14 - 16

Ruth, age 20, head of a household of eight in a single room. Ruth and her daughter adore the newest household member, age 24 hours. The newborn’s mother (Ruth’s sister) cooks a meal from maize flour given as a gift, 24 hours after giving birth.
